Stefan’s BIOGRAPHY

I was raised in a little town in East Texas called Redwater, which is between Texarkana and New Boston. As much as I would like to say that I knew I wanted to be a lawyer back then, I did not. Even if f I did not know it, though, everyone who knew me back then apparently predicted it because I never missed a chance to argue.

After college, I went to seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. It sounds funny for a lawyer to say that, but I think the two fields are more complementary than people think. I never picked up any real fondness for bourbon or horse racing while in Louisville, but I did fall in love with Tom T. Hall and Wendell Berry.

I got married in 2008 to my wife Carman, for whom I am eternally thankful and about whom I cannot say enough good things. We have one son together, Warren, and I am pleased to report that he is more like his mother than me. Both he and his mother are a delight to me.

I graduated law school from the William H. Bowen School of Law in Little Rock in 2013. I enjoyed both law school and lawyering and have been practicing primarily family law in central Arkansas since I graduated. I also handle appeals.

Family law is gritty, practical, and important. It is not about lofty ideals or abstractions, and I love that. Everything that crosses my desk as a family lawyer is the most significant thing going on in a client’s life right then.

Lots of lawyers promise empathy, but I don’t. I don’t have to understand why something is important to you. I don’t need to feel what you feel. My job is to listen and then accept that if something is important to you, then it is important to me because I believe you.

I am a member of the Arkansas Bar Association, Arkansas Trial Lawyer’s Association, American Bar Association, and Pulaski County Bar Association. I am heavily involved in the Young Lawyer’s Division for the Arkansas and American Bar Associations. I am also a member of the Collaborative Family Lawyers of Arkansas, which is a practice group specifically committed to helping people resolve family issues without unnecessary conflict. You could probably say I am a “joiner.”

If you care about this sort of thing, I was on Law Review and had two top papers during law school. I also served as a research assistant to multiple professors.

I like to spend time with my wife and kid, which right now usually involves dirt or animals or puzzles. (For my kid, anyway.) If I have my druthers on a Saturday, I am with them cooking or working in the garden, listening to classic country music for as long as my wife will tolerate it.
